MENTORS

Reflecting on my pursuit of musical happiness, three key individuals have shaped my passion for music production. Their encouragement and belief in me gave me the confidence to continue on my journey, transforming what started as a simple interest into a meaningful, purposeful ambition. Although each mentor is different, they share qualities that drew me to them: kindness, humility, and integrity. These qualities embodied the kind of person I aspire to be.

Mr. Ling, Zion, and Ms. Anderson are more than mentors for me; they are angels who led me to who I am today. They taught me the joy of embracing our talents and the importance of hard work and commitment to our craft. Together they shaped my journey as a musician. I’m grateful to them and to God for putting them in my life and hope someday I will be able to help others the same way they have helped me.

TED LING

Ted Ling was the first Taiwanese percussionist ever to obtain a Master's music degree in Jazz Performance. At the same time, he's also one of only a handful of musicians in Taiwan who has expert performance knowledge of African and Middle Eastern percussion techniques. Ted first studied percussion with renowned Taiwanese percussionist Guang-Yuan Guang. Using his persistence and passion, Ted followed another teacher of his, Ya-Wen Lien, in becoming one of the founding members of the ensemble Taipei Percussion.

Ted eventually went on to study in the U.S. at one of the most prestigious jazz schools in the entire world – Berklee College of Music, studying the techniques and theories of jazz and hand-drumming. After obtaining his Bachelor's Degree in performance, Ted went to New England Conservatory, continuing as a graduate student of jazz performance and earning a Master's Degree in music.

During his time in the U.S., Ted studied jazz drum performance with Fred Buba, African, Latin and Middle Eastern percussion with Sa Davis, Ed Uribe and James Haddad, as well as jazz vibraphone, compositional theory and Western percussion performance with Ed Saindon, Donny Nolan and Will Hudgin.

Since returning to Taiwan, Ted has actively promoted the performance and teaching of jazz drumming and world hand-drumming, and has also held a solo recital of jazz percussion at the National Concert Hall. Ted not only possesses marvelous technique and passion when it comes to percussion performance, he is also an outstanding jazz composer and arranger, with works including Butterfly Lines, Eternal Child, as well as publishing percussion teaching materials The Rhythm of Praise.

Influence on Caiden

When I first returned to Taiwan years ago, I felt out of place and took time discovering where I fit in. Each week, I reluctantly accompanied my brother to his drumming lessons. One day, his teacher Mr. Ted Ling invited me into the classroom as they played and handed me my brother’s drumsticks. Recognizing my natural ability, he offered to teach me as well. This kind gesture opened the door to the world of music and led to me joining the jazz band as a drummer. Years later, I learned that all this time I’ve been training with a renowned percussionist in Taiwan.

ZION ‘SWRV’ BIRDSONG

“Every so often, a rare talent like Caiden Lin hits the radar—true to his craft and dedicated to raising the bar. I’m honored and inspired to see you swerving in your gift, bro—proud to be part of your journey.”

Influence on Caiden

Another major influence on my path is Zion Birdsong, whom I met through church and became like a big brother to me. In the beginning of my junior year, a casual conversation we had took a very interesting turn when Dua Lipa’s hit “Don’t Start Now” came on the radio. I shared with him that a sudden change in tone in the iconic bassline that serves as the back for it, curiously energized me. Zion then revealed he worked in music production, and from that moment, we began discussing music non-stop. He recognized my potential and began teaching me how to use Studio One, a software I quickly became immersed in and started creating beats on. Zion was the catalyst for my passion for music production, and I’m forever grateful for his guidance.

JENNIFER ANDERSON

I have been teaching music in schools internationally for over twenty-five years and presently teach Band as well as Music Production & Technology. Originally from Regina, Saskatchewan Canada, I have spent my career working in Canada, Curacao, Korea and Taiwan. In addition to teaching, I have been involved in many of our school stage productions. I love overseeing the sound design for our shows, working with my students on the sound tech team, as well as helping to record many of our students' music performances. I love music, but also enjoy the quiet. Scuba diving brings me peace and balance, and the ocean is my second home.

Influence on Caiden

Ms. Anderson has been my band teacher at Taipei American School since I was in 5th grade. She was the one teacher that went above and beyond to help me pursue my dreams in music, convincing my parents that I had what it takes. After school days, I would work on my portfolio by myself and then go to her for feedback. She’s dedicated so much of her time to helping me in my journey despite having so many other students she’s providing guidance to. I’m truly grateful for Ms. Anderson’s dedication to her students and helping me in my journey through music production.
